Feb 26, 2008 Newsletter

Dear BVCA members

The BVCA directors met on Feb. 20, 2008. At that meeting Daisy Leslie, who is one of the owners of the Root Cellar market (previously the Big Barn), explained the plans that they have for their new market. This is to include produce, dairy products and specialty cheese. They also intend to promote local produce and organic produce. Daisy and her husband have 10 years experience working in a similar facility in the Okanagan.

The AGM is scheduled for Friday April 4 at the Cordova Bay Elementary School. The meeting will start at 7:30 PM, but for 30 minutes prior to the meeting, two tables will be set up with displays. One table will be manned by a member of the Saanich Emergency Preparedness Program and the other will be a display on how to differentiate the American Bull Frog from native species.

During the meeting, there will be a presentation on Emergency Preparedness and Nathalie Chambers will talk about the History of the Blenkinsop Valley (Part 2). Nathalie's talk last year was greatly enjoyed by those present.

One of the BVCA members is editing a newsletter for us which we hope to distribute to every home in the valley prior to the AGM. If any of you can lend a hand by delivering some of the newsletters, please let us know.

We received an agriculture report which indicated that approximately 35% of farms affected by the changes in the farm assessment appealed their assessment and 50% of these appeals were successful. Central Saanich is now permitting camping on farmland apparently with a limit of 10 campsites. Concern has been expressed about fill deposit on farm land.

The BVCA hopes to establish a web site by the end of the year. If any of you have experience in creating websites and could help us with this, we would appreciate hearing from you.

With thanks,

BVCA directors
