February, 2009  Newsletter

Dear BVCA members

The BVCA directors met on February 19, 2009. The following are the issues addressed:

Seven Oaks Garden Project

Two guests were present from Seven Oaks to discuss the possibility of the BVCA collaborating with Seven Oaks to create a vegetable garden on the Seven Oaks property. It is felt that this would be of therapeutic value to the residents of Seven Oaks. There was discussion about the size of the garden, fencing, water source, nutrient addition, cover crops, tilling and sustainability of the project.

The BVCA directors discussed the possibility of the BVCA contibuting to this by providing some financial support, by providing expertise from within our membership and by seeking volunteer help.

This project is just at a stage of preliminary exploration but if you would like to contribute by providing gardening/farming expertise or volunteer help please let the BVCA know by calling 250-477-8539.

BVCA Annual General Meeting (AGM) 7 PM, March 31, 2009

The AGM has been arranged for Tues. March 31 at the Cordova Bay Elementary School. Stacie Louttit, a bronze medal winner in sailing at the Beijing Paralympic Games and Blenkinsop Valley resident, will be speaking about and showing pictures from her Beijing experience.

BVCA Newsletter

The BVCA directors are planning to distribute a printed newsletter to each household in the Blenkinsop Valley prior to the AGM in March. We have started using the postal service to distribute the newsletters but there are five small routes (about 30 newsletters each) which are still done by volunteers. If you are able to help us with these routes it would be very much appreciated.

SCAN (Saanich Community Association Network)

At SCAN, a representative from Saanich outlined various initiatives which the municipality is looking at including the legalization of secondary suites, a study of the Shelbourne and Douglas corridors and encouraging rental house retention.

With thanks

The BVCA directors
