March, 2008 Newsletter

Dear BVCA members

The BVCA directors met on March 19, 2008. Preparations for the Fri April 4, 2008 AGM continued. The meeting will start at 7:30 PM but beginning at 7:00 PM there will be displays on Emergency Preparedness and on identification of the American Bull Frog which now resides in the Blenkinsop Valley. At 7:30 we will have a presentation from the Saanich Emergency Program about Emergency Preparedness. After this, there will be a presentation from Saanich Councillor Vic Derman on "The Role of Community Associations in Saanich". A business meeting will follow. We had previously announced a talk on the history of the Blenkinsop Valley but Nathalie Chambers, who was to give the talk, has had to cancel this because of other commitments.

We expect to deliver a newsletter to each home in the Blenkinsop Valley next week. There is a membership renewal form included as part of the newsletter. We would like to encourage you to renew your membership either by mail or at the AGM. If you renew at the AGM, it would reduce congestion at the entrance if you came with the renewal form and cheque ($10/person) completed.

We received a report from a talk given by a representative of the Agriculture Land Commission. Some of the statistics included: 2% of the provincial ALR is on Vancouver Island, 68% of Saanich farms are less than 10 acres, 50% of the land in the ALR is actively farmed, Saanich has the best growing climate in Canada, and land within the ALR on Vancouver Island has declined by 12% since the ALR was first formed.

We have received a request to give support to the Royal Oak residents in their quest to preserve a gymnasium which was built in the 1970s and is now facing demolition. Apparently there is significant demand for its use and there is no other land available in the Royal Oak area to build a similar structure. A new gymnasium has been built with the new Royal Oak Middle School but there is already a waiting list for its use. We decided to write letters of support for this project.

An updated proposal regarding the 4590 Lochside Drive subdivision was discussed and is expected to go before Saanich Council at 7:30 PM on Tues April 8, 2008. You are encouraged to attend to express your feelings about this proposal. The BVCA directors have previously written to Saanich opposing this proposal.

A copy of the minutes from last year's AGM is also attached.

With thanks

The BVCA directors
